What is General Surgery?

General surgery is a surgical specialty that deals with a wide array of operative procedures. It includes the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and injuries in various parts of the body, along with the patient care that comes before, after and during surgery.

These procedures are carried out by medical professionals called general surgeons and deal with a variety of conditions like:

·         Injuries from trauma

·         Skin lesions

·         Breast lumps

·         Hernias

·         Gallbladder diseases

·         Appendicitis

·         Colorectal issues (inflammatory bowel disease, haemorrhoids, etc.)

·         Endocrine conditions involving adrenal glands and thyroid

·         Medical conditions in the upper GI and biliary tract

·         Vascular conditions involving blood vessels, etc.

Types of General Surgery Procedures

Here are the most common types of general surgery procedures which people generally opt for:

1.    Hernia Surgery

All hernia cases do not need immediate treatment. However, with time, they can become quite painful, making surgery the only solution. Traditional hernia repair surgery methods include making an incision on the herniated tissue in order to put the organs back to their original position. Then, the surrounding healthy tissues are sutured to make a strong barrier and the incision is stitched back together.

Surgeons also perform laparoscopic or “keyhole” hernia repair surgery. This involves making three or four tiny incisions and performing the entire operation with the help of a laparoscope (a thin tube equipped with a tint video camera). It allows surgeons to perform the operation with minimal invasion.

Additionally, there is robotic hernia repair surgery that involves conducting a laparoscopic surgery with the help of robotic surgical instruments.

2.    Appendectomy

Appendectomy is a medical procedure which involves surgically removing the appendix. It is an effective way to mitigate the complications of appendicitis and is generally performed in two ways – open and laparoscopic.

In case of an open appendectomy, the surgeon will make a large incision in the lower right abdomen. Then, he will open the patient’s abdominal cavity and remove the appendix. In case it has ruptured, he will drain the fluid, rinse the cavity with saline solution and stitch up the incision.

For a laparoscopic appendectomy, the surgeon makes an incision near the belly button area and inserts a cannula (a tiny tube). Then, they inflate the patient’s abdominal cavity using carbon dioxide in order to get clear photographic images and make space for the surgery.

After this, the surgeon removes the cannula and inserts a laparoscope to find the appendix. He then guides his surgical instruments via other incisions, removes the appendix and then stiches them up.

3.    Gallbladder Removal Surgery

Cholecystectomy or gallbladder removal surgery is usually performed in case the patient has painful gallstones. In a majority of cases, surgeons perform laparoscopic cholecystectomy. They make incisions near the belly button and upper right abdomen to insert a cannula and inflate the abdominal cavity using carbon dioxide.

Then, they insert a laparoscope along with other surgical tools in order to remove the gallbladder. After this, they remove the gas from the patient’s abdomen and stich up the incisions. In some hospitals, robotic cholecystectomy is also available in which the whole procedure is performed by a robotic arm.

Additionally, if the patient has cardiopulmonary conditions or scarring from a previous abdominal surgery, open cholecystectomy is preferable.

Apart from these, there are several other general surgery procedures like:

·         Colon surgery

·         Breast surgery

·         Uterus removal surgery (Hysterectomy)

·         Spleen removal surgery (Splenectomy)

·         Prostate surgery (Prostatectomy)

·         Anti-reflux surgery and more

Benefits of General Surgery

Here are some of the benefits of general surgery:

·         Provides Effective Treatment for Numerous Medical Conditions

General surgery allows doctors to treat a wide array of medical conditions related to different body systems like gallbladder, appendix, uterus, spleen, etc. Additionally, it involves dealing with trauma-related injuries, removing cancerous tumours and skin-related issues like malignant lesions, moles, cysts, etc.

·         Enhanced Diagnosis and Treatment Accuracy

Due to advanced imaging techniques like ultrasound, CT scans, MRIs etc. surgeons can better evaluate the condition of a patient’s internal organs. It enables them to find the exact location of tumours, gallstones, etc. and decide the best course of action regarding the patient’s medical condition.

·         Minimally Invasive Techniques Promote Faster Recovery

Nowadays, most hospitals use minimally invasive techniques in order to perform surgical procedures. They include smaller incisions and specialised surgical instruments which facilitate lower postoperative pain, shorter recovery time and overall better patient outcome.

Moreover, such techniques allow doctors to carry out complex surgical procedures with less trauma, risk of infections, complications and chances of readmission.
